Perhaps the most profound ethical question on the horizon is when, not if, human driving might be restricted in certain contexts:
Should human driving eventually be prohibited on certain roads if autonomous vehicles demonstrate significantly better safety records?
How should society balance individual freedom to drive against the collective safety benefits of automation?
What accommodations should exist for those who prefer or need human driving options?
These questions will likely become increasingly pressing as autonomous safety records improve and the contrast with human driver performance grows more stark.
